Croatan’s JV baseball team completed an incredible season on Thursday winning their 20th consecutive game - a 12 to 10 decision against Richlands. The final victory in this perfect season however, did not come easy.
Croatan took an early 5 to 0 lead in the first inning only to see Richlands storm back with 3 runs in the 2nd inning and add another score in the 3rd, reducing the Cougar lead to 5 to 4. Croatan however tallied 4 in the 4th stretching the Cougar margin 9 to 4. Then things got crazy!
In the bottom of the 6th, Richlands put together 5 hits, 1 walk, and 4 Cougar errors to score 6 runs. Now Croatan had only one chance left, trailing 10 to 9. With two outs in the 7th, catcher Matt Stewart doubled to left-center. Freshman Chris Woodside saved the day with a shot to center off the fence sending Stewart across the plate tying the game at 10 to 10.
In the bottom of the 7th Richlands loaded the bases with one out, only to have Cougar relief pitcher Daniel Lewis strike out the side!
Finally, in the top of the 9th the Cougars scored 2 runs. Lewis led off with a walk. C.C. Wright followed with a bunt single and “Mr. Clutch” Matt Stewart drove Lewis in with another hit! Woodside followed with an RBI fielder’s choice, scoring Wright. Lewis struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th, and Croatan completed an unbelievable finish to an unbelievable season!
