Hall of Fame Honor for WCHS Duo
September 30, 2007 at 9:33 pm | In High | No CommentsCharles Hill and Carrie Emory were inducted into the West Carteret High School Hall of Fame during the halftime of Friday night’s football game between West and Havelock.
This is quite an honor for this dynamic duo. And congratulations are certainly due.
For me personally, though, it was a wake-up call. I taught at WCHS during Carrie’s playing days. What does it mean when one of your students enters the Hall of Fame? Hmmmm.
Keeping Up with Croatan
September 30, 2007 at 9:18 pm | In High | No CommentsThe Cougars get an award for their commitment to school sports reporting.

The interface of their athletic web is simple and effective. Their schedules and results are pretty darn current. It’s no easy task to keep track of the status of all sports at a good-sized high school. But kudos to David Perry and company for figuring it out!

Middle School Wrap-up
September 30, 2007 at 9:07 pm | In Middle | No CommentsFootball and girls soccer are in play with our middle schoolers.
Football has just kicked off week one of conference play with Broad Creek, Beaufort Middle, and Pamlico emerging victorious. Middle school football games will continue each Wednesday evening for the next four weeks.
Girls soccer is actually on the homestretch, with the final games on Oct 2, Oct 4 and Oct 9. Morehead Middle and Broad Creek lady booters are tied at the top with identical 5-0-1 records. The two titans clashed last week at MMS and played to a 0-0 draw. They face off again at BCMS on Oct 9. If necessary, a tie-breaker is scheduled for Oct 11.
Volleyball team selections and practices are just cranking up. That season starts in late October.
Catch the middle school results and standings on the school system’s athletic website.
Catching up with Kerra
September 30, 2007 at 8:53 pm | In High | No Comments
She was a presence on the hardwoods for her alma mater, East Carteret High School. Now Kerra Gore is bringing that same power and presence at Peace. She was named a USA South Rookie of the Week in September.
Against St Paul’s College in game 4 of pool play Sunday in Murfreesboro, NC, Gore recorded 16 kills and 5 blocks. Gore posted her first collegiate double-double in the 2-3 semi-final loss to NC Wesleyan with 21 kills and 10 blocks.
What Athletes Deserve
September 9, 2007 at 9:58 am | In Elementary, High, Middle | No CommentsThis timeless piece from Tim Stevens was published in the News and Observer on August 15. It lines up perfectly with the Coaches Education initiative we are providing this year.
Here’s a taste:
Isn’t it a shame that people don’t get what they deserve?
One irate mother called to say her son deserved to have his picture in the newspaper and an article written about him. He works hard, his mother said, and he has accomplished a lot. The coach doesn’t give him enough recognition, and he deserves more attention.
Another parent said the paper wasn’t supplying enough “ink” to help her child obtain a scholarship. The lack of a college scholarship was the coach’s fault to a degree, but the paper had a responsibility to promote her child because “he deserves it,” she said.
Sound familiar? Stevens counters that athletes really deserve a Great Coach, Great Parents, and Great Administrators. He offers qualifications for each.
The article, What Athletes Deserve, comes to us by way of Lisa Kittrell from her dad, Chuck Lewis. It is a must-read for all invested in the school business.
Dodge Driving
September 9, 2007 at 9:51 am | In High | No CommentsEx-WCHS kicker Matt Dodge now drives the punting game for the ECU Pirates. On Saturday, he nailed a 61-yard punt as a worthy ECU team established bragging rights with a 34-31 win over the UNC Tar Heels.
In two games, Matt’s stats are impressive. He has punted 15 times for 631 yards. His longest is 61 yards, and he has hit three over 50 yards. He has landed three inside the 20.
The Brothers Courman
September 9, 2007 at 9:27 am | In High | No CommentsThe college football world is still reeling from the effects of the opening day victory of Appalachian State over Michigan. ECHS graduate, T. J. Courman made a key catch and run with just over a minute to play to help set up the winning field goal.
A recent News-Times editorial points to a rare occurrence in the world of sports:
Tomorrow, as Appalachian State plays Lenoir-Rhyne, the Courman brothers go head-to-head against one another because younger brother Andrew plays for Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Courmans have a large contingent going to watch the game.
Said their father: “I just want both of them to play well. I don’t think they have ever competed against each other so it should be interesting. I’m going to stay neutral.”
So, the Mountaineer juggernaut manhandled Lenoir-Rhyne, 48-7. T. J. caught two passes for 15 yards; Andrew scored the lone Lenoir-Rhyne TD.
I had the fortune to teach both Andrew and T. J. at BMS about seven years ago. Aside from their athletic prowess, the brothers Courman are stand-up guys. They are quality students, and they are fun to be around. They fill up the room with good karma.
Here’s a favorite photo of Andrew in his senior year at East. It says a thousand words…
East Retains Battle of Bear Bragging Rights
September 8, 2007 at 9:03 pm | In High | No CommentsOn a 3rd and seven with just over four minutes to play, ECHS QB Trey Fulcher broke off a 73-yard weak side scamper to seal the deal for the Mariners in the ‘07 Battle of the Bear sponsored by Cubbies Restaurant.
Croatan offensive coordinator Scott McBride called unpredictable plays all night that kept the ECHS defense guessing and kept CHS in the game. Final: ECHS 21 CHS 14.
Major kudos go out to Coach Kemp Ewing and the ECHS Mariners, who once again possess the Carteret County bragging rights for high school football.
